Effectiveness of schema therapy in reducing Mental health problems caused by extramarital relationships in couples

Abstract

Background and objective: Each year the family of therapists and marriage counselors faces with many couples who their problems are betrayal .Therefore, therapists have recently considered reducing the mental health problems of these couples. Schema Therapy is known as a widely used method in developing mental health, thus the present study aimed to investigate the effectiveness of schema therapy in reducing Mental health problemscaused by extramarital relationships in couples.
Methods: This was a quasi-experimental design with pre-test and post-test. The population of the study were the couples dealing with infidelity, who visited the counseling centers in Torbat-e-jam. The participants were collected by attending the counseling centers or through recalling in those places. Among them, 50 patients were selected by available sampling and were randomly assigned to two groups, one experimental and one control (each group n = 25). The experimental group were trained by schema therapy during 8 sessions of 90-minute and the control group were placed on the waiting list. The mentioned groups completed Health Questionnaire (GHQ) as a pre-test and post-test. Data was analyzed using SPSS, version 19, with an independent t-test.
Results: The two experimental and control groups before the intervention were not significantly different from each other in terms of mental health (01 / p>). In the post-test, the mean score of the experimental group based on the mental health was increased (01/0 p <).
Conclusion: Training of schema therapy in reducing the mental health of couples with extramarital relationship problems is regarded very important.
