The Relationship between Attachment Styles and parental Bonding with Addiction Potential among University Students

Abstract

Background and Objective: Addiction or substance abuse is serious issue that threatens the human society. Several factors are effective on the emergence, persistence and treatment of addiction. Some probable predictors of substance abuse have been studied among which is attachment styles and parental bonding. The research was investigated the relationship between attachment style and parental bonding with the student's addiction potential.
Methods: This study was correlational. Individuals studied were all from Guilan university students in year 2013-14 289 of them were selected for sampling by cluster sampling method. To collect data from the Adult Attachment Scale Hazan and Shaver, Parental Bonding Inventory and Iranian addiction potential scale, the validity and reliability of using factor analysis and Cronbach's alpha. Data were analyzed by SPSS.ver.19 using Pearson's correlation test and stepwise regression.
Results: results showed that the correlation between addiction potential, avoidant attachment style and anxiety, secure and correlation parental bonding extreme support maternal and paternal positive and significant (P<0.01). Other results showed that the addiction potential and caring mother and father are negatively correlated (P<0.01). Conclusion: The results obtained can be used to enhance the secure attachment families with children tend to reduce drug use among students.
